For over a century, Elder Dempster was the largest UK shipping company to trade between Western Europe and West Africa. Elder Dempster had headquarters in Liverpool, and during the 1950s and 1960s employed over 4000 people including 1400 Nigerians and 400 workers from Sierra Leone. The company had a long history of employing Black seafarers. By the later 20th century the company was beginning to illustrate the diversity of its crews and passengers on marketing material such a posters, menus and other literature.
