Information

Pipe bowl carved from dark brown stone (possibly catlinite), large bowl in form of human head, stem in form of animal possibly beaver. Broken into three pieces, repaired. One ear, nose and nose of animal missing. The Anishinabe people believed that smoking tobacco helped to contact the spirits. Pipes similar to this would have been presented to Colonel DePeyster at his meeting with members of tribes of the Lakes & upper Mississippi in 1775.
