Cat Mummy Head

Mummified head a cat. that has been unwrapped. Facial features very well preserved with patches of fur in places.This is from the auction held in Liverpool on 10th February 1890 when an estimated 180,000 mummified cats, weighing 19.5 tons, were sold for fertilizer with a few being purchased for the museum. These cats were from Speos Artemidos (modern day Istabl Antar) near the famous necropolis of Beni Hasan. The mummy was X-rayed and CT imaged at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital on 19th April 2016 as part of the University of Manchester’s Animal Bio Bank Project.
