Cherry Trees in Flower

WAG 3144

Information

Lucien Pissarro was the son of the famous Impressionist Camille Pissarro. This view was painted from the terrace of Lucien’s farmhouse in the south of France during April 1931. He wrote that he considered this picture to be one of his most successful. This painting shows cherry blossoms drenched in sunlight. The small, rapid brushstrokes create a dappling light effect, typical of Impressionist painting. Areas of shadow have been made using shades of blue and purple. Colourful shadow was also a key feature of the Impressionist painting.
