Chocolate cup
LL 1537
Information
A white jasper cup which has been dipped in blue jasper. Handleless cups, like this, set into deep saucers to hold the cup steady, were used for drinking chocolate. The white stripes are produced by removing the top blue layer. Wedgwood developed this technique using an engine turning lathe. The white sprigged decoration depicts putti riding a lion-drawn chariot whilst playing trumpets. The saucer to match is LL 1538.
