Christ Washing the Apostles' Feet

Information

Christoph Schwarz was a painter at the Bavarian court of Maximilian I in the 16th century. His name is inscribed on the back of this drawing but the attribution is not certain. The drawing shows Christ washing the feet of his followers during the Last Supper, a scene from the Gospel of John in the Bible's New Testament (John 13:1–17). The task, usually done by servants, indicated Christ's humility and love. The act of cleansing also symbolised salvation, a precursor to Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
