Cloisonné Vase

Information

A number of Liverpool collectors responded to the devastation of the Blitz by donating or bequeathing their personal collections to Liverpool (now World) Museum. The Japan collections benefited a great deal from two Liverpool men who had collected Japanese objects for decades. One of the new arrivals to the collection was this cloisonné vase decorated with wisteria and insects. It was part of a large and impressive collection of Japanese decorative arts owned by Frederick W Mayor, a businessman who owned a furniture company in Liverpool. He not only bequeathed his collection to the museum, but he also gave an endowment so that the curators could purchase new objects for the collection.
