Coal Wharves, Staten Island

As an illustrator Pennell observed subjects from a distance. He was careful not to place himself in the composition, only recording what he saw. This detached view of Staten Island’s wharves, harbour and railway tracks looks towards New York with the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge in the distance.
