Coaster, 'The Masquerade Bar'
MOL.2015.87.1
Information
This drinks mat is from the Masquerade Bar on Cumberland Street in Liverpool city centre. The original Masquerade had been one of the city’s first gay bars, located near to Clayton Square on Cases Street until it closed in the 1980s. When the original Masquerade was closed this new venue opened on Cumberland Street and was named in its honour. The new Masquerade prides itself on being “Liverpool’s friendliest gay bar” with drag queen DJs, karaoke and cabaret acts at the weekend.
At an unofficial Pride held in Liverpool in 1995, rain caused the majority of the over 1000 attendees to seek cover in the Lisbon pub or the Masquerade Bar, where “there was standing room only, cheek to cheek as it were, as everyone tried to continue the day out, on the inside” (Pulse Magazine, Issue 37, 1995).
