Coffin Fragment

M12638

Information

Carved wooden ear, probably from an anthropoid (human-shaped) coffin. The front is naturalistically formed but the back surface is a flat plane. Ears on anthropoid coffins were carved separately and would have been pegged in place on the coffin during the manufacture process. There is now peg for attachment to a coffin so it has been suggested that it could actually be a model of an ear made to hear prayers. Date uncertain, but probably after Dynasty 18. CONDITION NOTE (1998): Dry, surface dirt.
