Coffin Fragment

1977.112.253

Currently not on display

Carved wooden ear from an anthropoid (human-shaped) coffin. The front is naturalistically formed but the back surface is a flat plane with remains of two pegs exposed. Ears on anthropoid coffins were carved separately and would have been pegged in place on the coffin during the manufacture process. CONDITION NOTE (1998): Loss of pigment, some discolouration, wood is light and dry, surface dirt.
