Information

Roman republican coin found near Malpas, Cheshire: denarius of C. Vinbius C.f. C.n. Pansa. Countermark A in front of mouth on obverse. As a group the Roman coins of the Malpas Hoard are typical of the range of material that would have been in circulation at about the time of the Roman invasion of AD 43. Although the production dates of the coins allow for a deposition date before AD 43, it is most likely that it was buried in the AD 40s or early 50s. The relative lack of wear on the Tiberian denarii supports a date soon after the Roman invasion. This dating is consistent with the likely dating of the Iron Age coins. Roman Republican Coinage reference: 449/1a.
