Collection of photographs belonging to Liverpool-born William John Roberts ("John"), agent of the Lagos Stores, Ltd., the British cotton mercantile firm operating in Nigeria, West Africa. Includes the following material: Photograph album dated 1912-1914, entitled "Photographs of West Africa ETC." Featuring approx 200 pages and 37 loose prints primarily taken in and around Lagos, Nigeria. Images of Lagos Stores compound, W.J. Roberts and co-workers/friends, indigenous Nigerian people (including local tribespeople and those possibly working as servants to Lagos Stores employees), British government officials, and some Roberts family photographs. Dated 1912-ca. 1914. Small album featuring snapshot photographs taken by W.J. Roberts. Images include horse races in Zaria, Nigeria, the Liverpool docks, Roberts family members in Liverpool, family graves in Toxteth Cemetery, and travel snaps from Clynnog, North Wales. Dated 1922-1935. Bundle of 63 postcards and postcard-sized photographs showing scenes in and around Lagos, Nigeria. Dated ca. 1912-1914. Named photographers and postcard publishers represented in the collection include Justus A.C. Holm (of Holm's Limited), Francois-Edmond Fortier, E.M.
