Commodore Robert George Thelwell (1896-1974), HMS Conway and Cunard.

Robert George Thelwell was born in Chester in 1896. He entered HMS Conway training ship as a cadet on the 13th September 1911. In December 1913 he left HMS Conway for a position as midshipman with HMS Neptune, followed by HMS Wahine and HMS Orvieto. He had been promoted to the rank of sub-lieutenant when he started serving on HMS Sabrina. He later commanded Cunard Line vessels. Commodore Thelwell died in 1974.
