Information

Born of humble origins in Manchester, Joseph Knight (1837 - 1909) was a self-taught artist who, despite losing his right arm at the age of four, showed much talent and aptitude for drawing. He began first as a portrait and figure painter, but later concentrated on painting landscapes, mainly in watercolour, and etchings of Welsh mountains and coastal areas. He showed considerable skill in engraving and became very successful, with many of his plates popular with collectors.
