Cosmetic Vessel

Information

A short and stout kohl pot with a thin base and a thin rim at the top. The vessel has a collar and a lid. Remains of cosmetic stuck to the base of the collar. Each part has an auction label stuck to the surface with the pencil number: 1077/ 7. Base of jar is marked in black ink 4104 and (probably) in pencil 416 (3). Record card describes this as a "slate or basalt kohl pot in 3 sections (base, rim, lid) marked 416/ 3" and desribes it as being from Abydos 416 A'07, 115 mm tall. Purchased at Sotheby's, London, 26 June - 6 July 1922 (MacGregor Collection) Lot 1077/6: "A Stibium Vase, in obsidian, 2 1/8 in. high; another, in black marble finely mottled with grey, 2 in. high, 12th Dynasty, found in Tomb 516 at Abydos in 1908; another, in greenish slate or basalt; 2 in. high, 12th Dynasty, found in Tomb 416 at Abydos in 1907; all with the original lids".
