Cosmetic Vessel

Carved stone jar of the type used for kohl eye makeup. Shouldered with wide flat rim. Base marked in pencil JRD. Compare with W. M. F. Petrie, Stone and Metal Vases (London, 1937) no. 731. CONDITION NOTE (1998): Chipped, worn, surface dirt. Danson Catalogue 1 no.133 "10 kohl pots - 8 alabaster, 1 black stone & 1 slate. Found by Prof. Garstang at Abydos, 1906 - also 4 kohl sticks".
