Cosmetic Vessel

Carved stone jar of the type used for kohl eye makeup. Disc-shaped lid with a flat boss on the underside, allowing it to fit into the mouth of the cosmetic vessel. Lid is 41 mm in diameter. Provenance recorded as "Egypt, Banks of Nile, 1870". Compare with W. M. F. Petrie, Stone and Metal Vases (London, 1937) no. 725. CONDITION NOTE (1998): Chipped, worn, adhesive residue on lid, surface dirt.
