Carved black stone jar of the type used for kohl eye makeup (cf. PSV 713). Purchased at Sotheby's, London, 26 June - 6 July 1922 (MacGregor Collection) Lot 1080/5: "Four Kohl-Vases, one with lid, in brown marble, 1 3/8 in. high, found at Esna in 1908; one in pinkish marble with black markings, 1 5/8 in. high; one in a semi-transparent green stone, 2 in. high; and the fourth in black basalt, 1 5/8 in. high." CONDITION NOTE (1998): Chipped, surface dirt, scratched.
