The artist is best known for his later watercolours of nudes cavorting in Mediterranean landscapes, which have been widely reproduced as prints. HIs earlier work is more controlled and demonstrates a refined decorative sense. This portrait of a woman with a striking profile was painted shortly after the First World War. Artists' materials were short and the watercolour has been applied to aircraft linen of the type used for the outer covers of airships.
