Cottage Interior with Seated Woman

Liebermann was a central figure in the German Impressionist movement. He was influenced by both French and Dutch art. He particularly liked to capture scenes from everyday life. Most of Liebermann’s subjects were taken from the daily lives of ordinary working people. He gave these scenes a spontaneous touch and natural effects of light. This painting was perhaps a sketch made for a larger painting, Woman with a Cat (now in the Getty Museum,Los Angeles, USA). The Getty’s version shows the same woman holding the black cat in her arms.
