Information

Green glazed steatite cowroid seal with incised single round the edge and the threading holes. The base is inscribed with a lotus design. Pierced through the length for suspension. Glaze worn in places. There is an accompanying red wax impression made by Professor Percy Newberry. Professor Newberry dated the cowroid to the 18th or 19th Dynasty (record card says early 18th Dynasty), contra Dr Downes who dated the contents of Esna grave no. 303 w to the Middle Kingdom. See Dorothy Downes, ‘The Excavations at Esna 1905-1906’ (Warminster, 1974) p. 64, no. 303.
