Information

Crazy Kate is a character in William Cowper’s poem The Task (1785), which favourably compares rural to town life. In her right hand Kate clutches a pin, which according to the poem she prized beyond food, clothes and comfort. Born in Manchester, Bishop settled in Liverpool aged about twenty. He studied at the Liverpool Academy, becoming its President in 1854.
