Damoxenus

LL 153

Information

This statue, a pair with 'Creugas' (LL 152), shows Damoxenos of Syracuse in Sicily. The two men were boxers who met at games held at Nemea in south-east Greece. They fought for many hours, until both men agreed to settle the contest with a single, undefended blow. Damoxenos killed Creugas with a blow judged to be a foul. Damoxenos was disqualified and Creugas declared the winner. The originals of these statues by Antonio Canova are in the Vatican Museums and were extensively copied, in this case on a small scale.
