A Dancing Bacchante (Album II)

This drawing was formerly attributed to the Circle of Girolamo da Carpi (about 1501-1556). Popham suggested Battista Franco. Anne Lauder helped identify it as a copy after a figure in Raphael's Vatican Loggie scene of 'The Israelites gathering manna', and suggested that it could be an early drawing by Franco who was in Rome in the late 1530s. Girolamo da Carpi also drew the same figure on a sheet of the Rosenbach Album in Philadelphia. [from Brooke, 'Mantegna to Rubens: the Weld-Blundell Drawings Collection', 1998, pp172-3]
