Delphi, hills
WAG 9740
Information
"Wilczynski visited Greece several times between 1952 and 1971, where she would have made this drawings of the hills around Delphi. Delphi was the ancient site of the Temple of Apollo, whose high priestess was known as the Oracle of Delphi. She provided wise counsel and prophetic predictions and an important figure in Ancient Greek culture.
Wilczynski remarked that it was in Greece that she discovered her 'feeling for nature', expressed in this sketch. She was most likely using her left hand to draw, a technique she developed after 1926, writing that 'the left hand...is not creative but has an autonomous power...There is no copying of nature but rather a re-creation with the extraction of the essential.'
