Information

This watercolour was exhibited by MacNair at the London Salon of the Allied Artists Association in July 1908, along with several other works by him and Frances Macdonald. The style reflects the influence of Macdonald and her sister Margaret, who used wraith-like figures in their paintings and embroideries, giving rise to their nickname the 'Spook School.' A note on the original backboard suggests this was made at the University School of Art where MacNair was a teacher, until it was abandoned in about 1905, although this does not fit with the inscription.
