Liverpool pilot Thomas Quirk used this diary to record the activities aboard a serving pilot boat during the month of March 1865. On Tuesday March 14, he records: "Wind east hazy weather, nothing in sight at 6:30 PM, boarded the schooner Hope wind ENE light". On Wednesday March 15, he records: "Wind SSW light breeze, No.4 second on turn at 12am, got three men from No.9".
Thomas Quirk was born in 1827 and was a serving Liverpool pilot from 1850 to 1871. By 1865 he was probably a pilot boat Master. He died in 1893.
