Rowley Smart predominantly painted landscape and urban scenes. He studied at Manchester School of Art 1901-03 and in Liverpool 1903-06. He was an early member of the Sandon Studios Society in Liverpool, 1907 and founder member of the Society of Modern Painters in Manchester in 1912. Smart served in France in 1914-1919 which undermined his health. He was friends with and lived with Augustus John (1878-1961) in Dorset and later mostly in France. 

Feriolo is on Lake Maggiore in Italy.
