Information

The Ministry of Food was established in late 1916 “to promote economy and to maintain the food supply of the country”. Britain had been faced with rising food prices and rationing of resources since early in the war. However, when the U-boats fully unleashed their unrestricted warfare campaign in 1917, the British Government realised how vulnerable the country was to being cut off from their imported food supplies. The Ministry of Food released posters like this one to advise people not to waste food.
