Door of the Alhambra

Information
Lewis had visited Spain in 1833 in order to study the Spanish Masters at the Prado. He became fascinated with the Moorish architecture of Andalucia during the trip and completed a number of drawings and sketches of the Alhambra while he was there. This watercolour is one of the drawings he made during this trip. Lewis was more concerned with capturing an 'impression' of the place rather than architectural accuracy in these drawings.
Lewis later used this watercolour and others from the trip as the basis for his series of 26 lithograph prints titled 'Sketches and Drawings of the Alhambra', printed in 1835. This watercolour is related to plate 11 in the volume.
