Information

Roberts was born on London Road, Liverpool, on the 5 February 1831. His father Benjamin Roberts was a house painter, who also painted and taught his son. Benjamin exhibited still-life and genre subjects at the Liverpool Academy between 1850 and 1865 and at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition in 1872. Henry was apparently first trained to his father's profession, but turned to painting and entered the Liverpool Academy Schools as a probationer on 21 November 1850; he exhibited there, 1852-65; he was elected Associate in 1855 and Member in 1859. He was 'corresponding artist in London' for the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, 1871-76, and exhibited there between 1871 and 1904. He exhibited with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and was elected Associate in 1867 and Member in 1870; he resigned in 1884.
