The Dressmaker, 1988 The first of Beryl Bainbridge’s novels to be adapted for the silver screen, The Dressmaker is a tempestuous coming-of-age drama exploring themes of longing, regret and unrequited love in 1940s wartime Liverpool. The film, like much of Bainbridge’s work, is semi-biographical. An Awfully Big Adventure, Bainbridge’s novel about her early life at Liverpool Playhouse Theatre, also made it into film in 1995.
