Information

This is part of a group of drawings by British artist and book illustrator Edward Francis Burney, depicting scenes from Greek and Roman history and mythology. Ducalion (Deucalion) and Pyrra (Pyrrha) were the heroes and survivors of the Greek Deluge myth. In Roman versions of the story, having survived the flood and realising that they are all alone, the couple seeks advice from the Oracle of Themis who tells them to throw stones over their shoulders that miraculously turn into people. These people became the ancestors of mankind. This part of the story takes place differently in Greek accounts - see WAG 7662.
