Duke's Dock, Liverpool

WAG 8789

Information

Located south of Albert Dock and west of Wapping Dock, the privately built Dukes Dock was predominantly used by traffic travelling along the Bridgewater Canal from Manchester. This view looks towards the river Mersey. Linocut is a relief printing method that produces broader effects in image than fine printing lines. Penn has achieved an ambient chiaroscuro effect around the shadowed grain warehouses and the sunlit sheds and barges, without sacrificing the detail of the brickwork or the intricate texture of the quay wall. Penn was a successful Merseyside printmaker and painter of portraits in oils.
