Ecce Homo, Latin for ‘Behold the Man’, was the phrase used by Pontius Pilate when presenting Jesus to a crowd. Pilate was the leader of Jerusalem. Here he points to Jesus who has been wounded by a crown of thorns.
This was one of Morales’ most popular subjects. He created many versions for both religious and non-religious patrons. His paintings are known for their intense emotions and intricate detail.
