The Echo

Bell was Head of the Decorative Arts Department at Liverpool School of Architecture and Applied Arts (1894-99). From the turn of the 20th century he focused on religious, mythological and allegorical subjects. One of the models for this painting was Jane [Ivison ?] Golifer, aged fourteen at the time, who was selected by the artist from a large number of Liverpool schoolgirls because of her black hair.
