Echo

Ford produced elegant nudes inspired by French 19th century and Renaissance precedents. 'Echo' stands on a pedestal of green connemara marble, mounted with gilt metal corners, which was specially designed to resemble flowering rushes. The base of the statue itself is modelled to represent swirling waves which gently lap the figure's toes. The rushes and waves probably relate to the mythical story of Echo and Narcissus. Echo's love for Narcissus was not returned, and he instead fell in love with his own reflection and pined away, staring at himself in a pool of water. Echo herself wasted away until nothing remained except her voice.
