This watercolour is one of seven topographical continental views  that are particularly small and framed together in the Lady Lever collection. It was probably copied by an unknown artist from the steel engraving by Robert Brandard (1805 - 1862) after Clarkson Stanfield's (1793 - 1867) original view for Charles Heath's 'Picturesque Annual for 1833: Travelling sketches on the Rhine and in Belgium and Holland'.

The medieval castle of Ehrenbreitstein is located on the Rhine at its junction with the Mosel opposite Koblenz. It fell to Napoleon in 1799 and was destroyed in 1801 after the French had departed.  It was rebuilt when the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1815 and it became the second largest fortress in Europe, after Gibraltra.
