Information

An incomplete decorated ceramic encaustic tile. The tile is decorated with a brown cross fourchee around central quatrefoil. Trilobes and dots alternate between each arm of the cross. The tile is marked on the back so can be traced to Godwin and Sons manufacturers in Hereford. The design is illustrated in the Paved With Colour pamphlet as n349A. The tile was found beneath a disturbed brick rubble dump below what would have been the first floor bathroom of number 7 Albert Parade. This object was excavated by Museum of Liverpool Archaeology and community volunteers during the Piermaster's Green Community Dig. The project investigated the homes of Dock Masters, Pier Masters and their families. Numbers 7, 8 and 10 Albert Parade were built by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board in 1852 to accomidate staff for the Albert and Canning Docks. The houses were hit by an incendiary bomb during the Second World War.
