Face Mask

Masquerade was a highly developed art in Dogon communities. Many different types of masked dancer performed during the complex funeral ceremonies held for deceased members of the men’s initiation association 'Ava'. The maskers dramatized the deceased’s transformation to ancestor-hood. This highly abstract mask may be of a type worn by a masked figure called ‘samana’.
