Fair Scene in a Dutch Town

Information

Comparison with watercolours by Meijer in the collections of the Gemeentearchief, Rotterdam and the Atlas van Stalk Collection, Rotterdam confirm the Walker's watercolour is definitely by the artist. 'Fair Scene in a Dutch Town' is a fantasy composition combining features of two cities in the Netherlands. The main sqare in the view is based on Nieuwmarkt (translated as New market), a square in the centre of the Dutch capital Amsterdam. On the left of the square is the The Horse in the Cradle inn, in reality located in Rotterdam, the second city of the Netherlands. There are three similar views of Rotterdam inns by the artist. They all date from 1803 or 1804.
