Female Spirit Figure

This figure is the female of a male-female pair of Poro spirit figures and partner to the male figure 1966.218.12a. An influx of protestant missionaries into Senufo territories from the early 1960s meant that a significant number of Senufo sculptural works connected with indigenous religious practices appeared for sale in European art galleries as collectors bought up Senufo works ‘renounced’ by new converts.
