Fields at Tossa

Information
Frank Lambert, Director of the Walker Art Gallery, selected about 10 works from Thomas Agnew & Sons to be included in the 1936 Liverpool Autumn Exhibition. This painting had already been purchased by Thomas Agnew & Sons from the artist in 1936, which was then sold to the Walker Art Gallery after the exhibition in 1937 [with support from the Derby Bequest].
Du Plessis was born in South Africa in 1894, and joined the South African Armed Forces during the First World War. After the war he became a journalist in Johannesburg, and in 1922 he relocated to England. He worked as a freelance journalist until 1956 after which he pursued painting full time. Tossa is presumably Tossa del Mar in Spain.
