Figure of a Woman on a Bed

1973.1.74

Information

Carved limestone representation of a naked woman wearing a wig and cone on top of her head, lying on a bed. Painted details on the figure and the bed (a patterned bed sheet?) survive in many places. Figures such as this one were used as votive offerings in temples or as objects of worship in private homes, and expressed the desire for children and perhaps magically ensured rapid conception. Marked on the back, "Ashmunein 1901 C". The initial C may possibly be a reference to the antiquities dealer Michel Casira.
