The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple

WAG 246

A group of rabbis are seated inside a temple. To the left is a blind rabbi holding The Torah. A young child is kneeling on the floor holding a whisk, made of dried palm-leaves, used to drive away flies and fan the air. Standing behind the rabbis are three men holding musical instruments, a fourth holds a decanter of wine. To the right are Joseph, Mary and the young Jesus. Joseph and Mary have their arms around Jesus and he holds his mother’s arm. On the floor, at the entrance of the temple lies an ear of corn. Doves fly through the open doorway and into the temple. Outside there is a blind beggar and in the near distance are men at work. In the far distance there are the tops of trees and the ridge of a hill.
