One of a pair of backless slippers in red leather with an embossed design.
CONDITION NOTE (1998): very dry, brittle , worn, surface dirt, surface loss.
Old label from the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum reads: "Red leather sandals made of gazelle skin [Period BC 200 - 400 AD]". Ex Wellcome Historical Medical Museum accession number 31217; purchased for Sir Henry Wellcome at Stevens' auction house, London, 6 August 1924 lot 72 "Roman wooden box containing original thread, and 12 Roman and Coptic shoes, all found in Egypt, rare".
