One of a pair of red painted slippers, traces of embroidery including rosette on toe. CONDITION NOTE (1998): Old infestation, surface loss, worn, leather very dry, splitting and cracking, surface loss, surface dirt. Old label from the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum reads: "LEATHER SHOES WITH EMBROIDERED ORNAMENT IN THE FORM OF A ROSETTE ON THE TOE [COPTIC PERIOD 300 TO 500 A.D] 10 ". Ex Wellcome Historical Medical Museum accession number 31217 (check number 17702 "Shoe red leather showing traces of embroidery"); purchased for Sir Henry Wellcome at Stevens' auction house, London, 6 August 1924 lot 72 "Roman wooden box containing original thread, and 12 Roman and Coptic shoes, all found in Egypt, rare".
