The Four Seasons - Winter

Crane was well known for his illustrations. This particular work is one of four designs produced by Crane depicting the four seasons. It is thought that they are the original designs for a series of Christmas cards that were produced and sold by Marcus Ward & Co and appeared in one of their sales catalogues in the 19th century. This design represents winter. Crane has incorporated mistletoe within the image, which is widely associated with Christmas and has the ability to blossom during winter.
