The collection was built up by Mrs Frances Wilkins, who has carried out extensive research into customs and excise history, particularly the history of smuggling at ports around the UK. The collection was acquired through the National Museum of Customs & Excise, Merseyside Maritime Museum, who have retained the books in the collection in their staff library.
The research collection held at the Maritime Archives & Library is accessible to any member of the public in the Searchroom. The material is not fully catalogued, only a box list is available (see attached). The library collection is accessible by appointment only through the Customs & Excise Museum curators.
Please note - much of the archive material consists of photocopies of documents. Under copyright law we are not permitted to further photocopy these items.
